So here's the deal. I know this might be controversial ... go ahead and judge me ... but I really "hate" playdates.
Why? Well, I think it's partly because...
- I have three kids who all get along really well and I want them to play together.
- I work part-time so I can be home WITH them in the afternoons. (It's MY playdate!)
- Weekends I just want to "be a family."
- The coordination seems cumbersome. I save my meeting scheduling patience for work-work.
So, I've garnered a bit of a reputation at school. I am the one who "admittedly" does not like playdates. I remember Daughter (when she was 4) telling a friend, "My mom is not very good at playdates." Um. Uh. Yeah. But I kick-a** at driving them to swimming or making a fun afternoon snack and a great family dinner. What-ever.
Little Guy is like the Kindergarden homecoming king. Boys AND girls just loooove him. It's like taking a little celebrity to school every day. The shouts come from everywhere. It's bizarre. But they all just love him. Girls want to marry him and boys want to have playdates. Great.
Fast forward to today. This morning (at 7:20?) the phone rings. I don't recognize the number but I answer it anyway. The woman explains she's someone's grandma and asks if I'm busy. (It's 7:20 am and she's asking me if I'm busy?? The snark in me was really struggling with answering that question politely.) I respond that, "Well, I'm making breakfast and lunches and getting the kids ready, what's up?"
She asks when she can call me back. (I still don't really know who she is or why she's calling.)
Me: What's up?
Her: Well, N really wants a playdate with Little Guy.
Me (visibly wincing while spreading the peanut butter on the wheat bread and grabbing a banana for the lunch bag): Ohh. I'm notoriously bad about playdates, but I'm sure we can figure something out one day.
Her: I never see you at pickup.
Me (a little defensive): I'm there every day but Monday.
Her: I never see you.
Me: I'll look for you today.
Deferred pain. Oy. Am I just "mean girl" as my kids sometimes call me...? Ick. Anyone else out there hate playdates?
